Edge Training & Consultancy booked us to perform in the post-lunch graveyard slot for a conference. This was arranged for doctors and social workers, and covered DoLS (Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards) which protect care home residents.
The artistic vision of the show was to look beyond how an elderly resident presents, to explore the extraordinary life they might have led.
In our musical, we jumped back in time and discovered that Rhys had trained to be an astronaut, fallen in love with her co-pilot while in space and, when we returned to the present day, was dearly loved by her husband and daughter.
The musical was a blend of humour and sadness with an uplifting finale.
The client's verdict: "That was absolutely brilliant and fitted the brief perfectly"
We were commissioned to create a series of three musicals as part of Toynbee Hall's People's History of Petticoat Lane festival.
We performed at the festival's launch and wrap parties, with a further show in nearby Streets of Growth's beautiful theatre space.
As part of the commission, we were funded to research the history of Petticoat Lane and surrounding area and meet with residents past and present. The learnings gave our musicals an authentic backdrop.
Chiltern Open Air Museum introduced us to one of its costumed interpreters.
Thomas Jeffrey was peasant farmer from the Middle Ages, living in Leagrave Cottage and whose profession was straw weaving for the hat-making industry. We conjured up a heartwarming tale of how he outwitted the local squire as he embarked on his quest to save up a groat in order to pursue a better life.
